Eight ideas to jumpstart your next dreamy couples' staycation
Netflix, takeout and sweatpants have become the new date night, thanks to sitter-finding, conflicting schedules and downright exhaustion. But there’s something about getting dressed up and going out that rekindles a relationship more than greasy pizza and a Breaking Bad marathon.
And while dinner and a movie are acceptable, thinking outside the box can make for a more memorable, exciting adventure with your partner, ultimately drawing you closer.
Before you embark on your staycation, set some ground rules:
SET A BUDGET THAT ALLOWS FOR FUN
Even though you’re staying close to home, you want to create a budget that enables you to experience your city like a tourist would. Make your game plan and then budget accordingly.
TURN OFF DEVICES
This is your time to reconnect with your partner. Turn off your phone, abstain from checking email and avoid thinking about work.
PUT THE WORLD ON HOLD
This means no laundry, no cleaning and no working from home. Create the time and space in your calendar and your mind to step back and appreciate each other.
With those ground rules in place, here are a few ideas to kickstart your Twin Cities staycation:
Start your day with a stroll through the Lyndale Peace Gardens. Make time to view the seven stone sculptures, each one representing the East Harriet neighborhood’s feelings about the meaning of peace. Just five miles west lies one of Minneapolis’ hidden gems: Minnehaha Park. A stone’s throw from the Mississippi River, this park is home to Minnehaha Falls, a 53-foot waterfall. After your morning of strolling through nature, grab a handcrafted coffee (we love The Hibernator) at Five Watt Coffee.
Learn about the entwined histories of the flour industry, the Mississippi River and Minneapolis at Mill City Museum, the site of what used to be the world’s largest flour mill. A fascinating 19-minute multimedia show gives you a look at Minneapolis like you’ve never seen before. Grab a Spoon Burger, the Minnesota-farmed lamb burger with Moroccan spices and house-herb ketchup, and an iced tea at the nearby Spoonriver.
After your calming facial and Swedish massage inside the Minneapolis Life Time Fitness at LifeSpa, grab a quintessential Minnesota staple, the Blucy at The Blue Door Pub. Your staycation doesn’t have to end after your burger, though. Spend the night in a dream home or condo, like this apartment, offered through Airbnb, inside one of the city’s historic mansions. Or, if you’re trying to save benjamins, set a relaxing, comfortable and romantic mood in your own home.
More important than the sights to see or the meals to eat on your staycation is the time spent with your partner. Make time to discover new things about your spouse and your city. Trust us, it’s better than a night on the couch in sweats.
