Puppy Bowl XIV Fun Facts
The world's cutest sporting event, The Puppy Bowl, is back for the 14th consecutive year and we are ready for 2 hours of tail-gating filled with furry fumbles and tiny tackles. Tune in on Sunday, Feb. 4 at 3 p.m. ET on Animal Planet to watch Puppy Bowl XIV! We give it two paws up! Here are five things you might not have known about the annual puppy bowl!
1. The dogs are adoptable
The puppies featured in the game are all available for adoption! This year's show will feature 39 adoptable puppies from about 48 rescue centers around the country placed on either Team Ruff or Team Fluff. The purpose of the battle is to win the Lombarky Puppy Bowl trophy, the title of MVP (Most Valuable Pup), and ultimately, a home.
2. It's not a live broadcast
The Puppy Bowl is shot over the course of two days in October. Since it's difficult to narrow it all the footage between the 21 cameras down into a two-hour show, it takes three months of preparation. The footage is chosen to highlight the cutest and most action-filled moments.
3. The cheerleaders are always changing
Beginning in 2010, there has been cheerleaders to root for the competing canines. In the past, there has been teams of bunnies, chickens, pigs, hedgehogs, Nigerian dwarf goats, and big-haired silkie chickens.
4. You can draft a Fantasy Puppy Bowl team
There is Fantasy Puppy Bowl for even more competition on game day. To play, you pick a team of three pups. Once the game begins, the puppies are awarded points for achievements including touchdowns, field goals, takeaways, and tackles.
5. Peanut butter helps... a lot
All of the adorable images and videos don't come without a cost. The production team's secret? Peanut butter. The cameras are strategically placed to get the best angles, one mounted beneath a glass-bottom water bowl and others are hidden in the dogs’ chew toys. Of course, they’re smeared with peanut butter beforehand.
